Carroll County Democratic Central Committee Meeting Minutes February 8, 2018 Meeting was held in the small Meeting Room of the Finksburg Branch of the CCPL and was called to order by Don West, Chair, at 7:00 pm. Committee members in attendance Don West, Mitch Edelman, Corynne Courpas, Anita Riley, Frank Rammes, Charles Harrison, Tom Scanlan, Dorothy Scanlan, Anne Stoner Other attendees Kara Adamcik, Lily Gavin (interns) Guest: Emily Shank, candidate for state delegate, 5th district Raquel Walsh, Carroll CAN leader; Kate Sanner Chair's Report Carroll Can met January 13th at the Eldersburg library. Don spoke about the 2018 elections. MLK breakfast was on January 27th. CCDCC was well represented. Candidate filing is February 27. Executive committee met on Monday February 5. Phase 2 of the resistance and renewal. A new LGBTQ representative was appointed. It's important to speak up if we feel the representation is not what we think it should be. Most of the male members of the central committee have filed, but only one woman has filed. Secretary's Report Motion to approve report by Corynne C.., 2nd by Tom S.; vote unanimous. Treasurer's Report Treasurer's report was sent out via email to the members and shows a current balance of $6,521.01. Had to apply to be a part of Fallfest. Motion to approve report by Frank R., 2nd by Mitch E.; vote unanimous. Club Reports Carroll County Democratic Club: next meeting is in March. Thinking of inviting filed Democratic candidates. April's speaker is Tim Hickman who is coming with copies of his book. May not have a May meeting in lieu of a potential candidate forum. South Carroll Democratic Club: No report Young Dems: No report VOCAL: no update. Dual focuses of ethics ordinance & opioid crisis. Carroll CAN: next meeting is February 18th at the Finksburg library @2pm. Committee Reports Annapolis: Shoemaker and Rose have sponsored a bill to allow guns in schools. Another issue to watch: Volunteer firefighter/EMS services shifting to paid positions. All other discussions tabled; no new updates Old Business Candidate filings: covered in chair's report Victory dinner: May 10th. No further update. New Business Candidate info on our website: consistency and timeliness if we are going to do this. Hold off on any decisions until after the filing deadline. Appointing candidates: If no one files for a particular office, the CCDCC has the authority to nominate candidates. We have until March 5th to submit names. Nominated person would still have to pay the filing fee. MDP VAN program: Tabled Impeachment party: After the candidate training workshop, starting @ 4pm at Corynne' Candidate Recruitment & Training: Training packet has been created. Mitch will take care of copying. Each segment will be fifteen minutes. Candidates, potential candidates, and volunteers will attend. Make sure we talk to all. CD 1 Forum: To be held on May 17thin the large meeting room of the Finksburg library. Chuck Harrison has agreed to moderate. Invite Wayne Carter. If he can't do it, could invite Karen Merkel or Christie Crumley. Zach Hands: Justin Ready has a lot of money and will use it to give to other Republican candidates. It would be good to have someone run against him so that he might have to actually spend some money on a campaign. It would also be better to NOT nominate and to have truly interested people file instead. Candidate Shank has requested that the CCDCC not nominate a candidate. Motion to approve made by Don W., seconded by Corynne C. Motion passed with one nay and one abstain. Announcements The next regular meeting for the CCDCC will be Thursday, March 8, starting at 7:00pm, at the Finksburg library. Meeting adjourned at 8:45pm.
