Minutes of the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee February 11, 2016 In attendance: Don West, Anita Riley, Corynne Courpas, Mitch Edelman, Frank Rammes, Charles Harrison, Dorothy Scanlan, Tom Scanlan. The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Don West. Pledge of Allegiance Chair’s Report The Rural Maryland Summit is March 11-12. So far we have five going from the Central Committee. An ad needs to be submitted for the program. The CCDCC Democratic Victory dinner will be on May 19th. Secretary’s Report Corynne Courpas made a motion to accept the Secretary’s report; Frank Rammes seconded. Passed unanimously. Treasurer’s Report Frank Rammes moved to accept the Treasurer’s report; Tom Scanlan seconded. Passed unanimously. Club Reports CC Dems: The next meeting will be on April 4th at Johansson’s @ 7pm. Members will meet for dinner at 6. The school board candidates have been invited to come and speak. So far, one candidate is coming. The May meeting will feature the new HSP director. South Carroll Club: Anita held a meeting with a few of the members. It was decided to send a letter to their mailing list to get input as to whether to continue as a club. Committee Reports Local Politics: The hot topic continues to be education, particularly the fact that no one seems to want to do anything to solve the CCPS’s budget crisis. Annapolis: The focus was on the three delegates serving the 5th district. So far Susan Krebs has sponsored 68 bills; Haven Shoemaker, 65 bills; and April Rose, 69 bills. None of our delegation has sponsored any significant legislation to support public education. They all have sponsored legislation to weaken public safety laws dealing with gun ownership. Shoemaker has sponsored a ridiculous bill calling for term limits on board of education members. Communications: We need to send an eblast about the forum and add it to the CCTimes’ online calendar. Events Voter registration: Carroll Community College is hosting a voter registration drive on February 17 & 18 from 11-1. Mitch is coordinating and Frank and Anita will volunteer; Zach may be able to help as well. Democratic Victory dinner: Anita will need help with the silent auction. She suggested that themed baskets are a popular auction item. We are happy to accept cash donations to build these baskets. It was suggested that we ask Wes Moore for an autographed book... for the silent auction. We will need an MC. Since the dinner is only a few weeks after the primary, the dilemma is who to ask to be the keynote speaker. Jim Ireton may be a possibility. Forum: The forum is scheduled from 7-9pm. All candidates but one have accepted the invitation to participate. Candidates will arrive at 6pm. We’ll have water and snacks on hand. The moderators will be Wayne Carter, CCTimes editor, and Charles Harrison, CCDCC member. The format will be as follows: one minute for opening statements and 2 minutes for closing statements. Candidates will have one minute to respond to questions; rebuttals will be permitted. We will solicit questions through social media and are counting on the Times to run a piece on the forum. We will also give the audience the chance to write down questions. Questions should go to all candidates. We will need a timer and cards with time left to answer written on them. We will need a table for literature. We’ll need all hands on deck to assist with set-up, collect questions, and act as “handlers”. Don will be meeting with the Community Media Center who will be providing live streaming. Old Business Intern: we held a conference call with our intern. She will focus on helping with social media. We have other applicants; Zach is taking a look at those. New Business The Frederick County DCC is having its JJ dinner before the Maryland primary—on April 13th. Tickets are $85. We will purchase a half-page ad. CCDCC members are encouraged to attend. VAN: Zach should receive training on using VAN. The meeting adjourned at 9:00. Respectfully submitted, Dorothy Scanlan Recording Secretary, CCDCC
