Minutes of the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee June 9, 2016 In attendance: Don West, Anita Riley, Corynne Courpas, Mitch Edelman, Frank Rammes, Charles Harrison, Dorothy Scanlan, Tom Scanlan, Zach Hands, Anne Stoner, Sadie Allgeier Interns: Ryan Koch, Henry Snurr, Guests: Muri Dueppen, The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Don West. Pledge of Allegiance Chair’s Report Our Democratic Victory dinner was very successful. Speakers were Chris Van Hollen, Jamie Raskin, and Joe Werner. The state party meeting was well attended by our members. The next full state party meeting is in September. There is a fundraiser for Jamie Raskin on June 22nd; all members are encouraged to go. Secretary’s Report The May minutes were approved with one minor correction. Treasurer’s Report There is a balance of $7,820.40 in our checking account. Treasurer’s report was approved. Our insurance is paid for the year, and dinner expenses are paid. We should have about $9,000 to fund our headquarters. The question of whether we would need to pay for Hillary Clinton signs was raised. We likely will have to pay for them, but we will wait until after the convention. Club Reports CC Dems: The annual picnic will be July 17th at the Silver Run/Union Mills Park from 1-4pm, rain or shine. Everyone will need to sign up to bring a dish to share. You can BYOB. Club membership is required to attend the picnic; dues are $15. The club is anticipating that candidates or their representatives will attend. The planned speaker for the May meeting could not make it so will be asked to speak at the September meeting. The club plans to ask Board of Education candidates to speak at the October meeting. The club will host a sign rally the night before the election. Looking ahead, the holiday dinner is tentatively scheduled for December 8 at the Buttersburg Inn. South Carroll Club: no report. Anita is hoping to have a meeting in September. Committee Reports Local Politics: The county budget passed 3-2. CCEA and CCPS have come to a tentative agreement. The CCPS closure appeal will be heard June 28th. Annapolis: tabled until next session. Communications: Please send website updates to Don. Mark is very responsive about getting them up. LTEs are needed. Keep commenting on the CCTimes editorials. Send out eblasts for the Raskin event and for the picnic. LGBTQ: Anne reported that the DC Pride parade is this Saturday. Upcoming Pride events are June 25th, Frederick Pride; and July 23-24th, Baltimore Pride. At the next Board of Education meeting on June 15th, Superintendent Guthrie will outline how the school system will comply with federal regulations as they relate to transgender students. Old Business Democratic Victory dinner: 85 dinners were served. The silent auction did well. Should we rethink the dinner date or the silent auction? The live auction did very well, so this is something that should be repeated. Candidate forum-Don emailed Marion Ware about the possibility but has not received a response. A Raskin/Cox forum would be ideal. Candidate training: tabled Intern: Zach has let the application expire and will repost it in August. There is a young Dems club starting at Westminster High School. Charter: Tabled Headquarters: We have a potential excellent location on Main Street. Details need to be ironed out, but we just need to make an offer. Anita made a motion to authorize up to $2,500 for rent for the HQ space. Frank seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Corynne will ask how soon we can get in, but an August 1 opening would be the goal. We would close mid-November. Start thinking about supplies and furniture-folding chairs/tables, etc. New Business Fall breakfast: Tabled. Officer elections: Vote will be in the fall. Trifold Brochure: needs to be updated. Fallfest: Corynne has the paperwork and will register us for Fallfest which is September 24th and 25th. The meeting adjourned at 9:20. Our next meeting will be July 14, 2016. Respectfully submitted, Dorothy Scanlan Recording Secretary, CCDCC
