Note from the President (NEW)
Dear friends,
I was thinking the other day about what a great event the Club’s Annual Picnic on July 25th was, and it occurred to me that it was so successful because it was a blend of several things that I think the Club does very well – socializing, politics (with our wonderful elected officials Rep. Jamie Raskin and Westminster Mayor Dr. Mona Becker and several candidates – including five gubernatorial candidates and two CD-01 candidates – as inspiring speakers), activism (our food drive), and philanthropy (our gift basket raffle to raise funds for the Good Works Fund). These elements serve our Club members, our community, our state, and our nation and they reflect our values as Democrats.
The camaraderie of our CC Democrats also made our Picnic a great event. We Democrats know how to have fun – but we also know how to work hard when we are called upon to support Democratic candidates and causes, and to fight for what is right.
Credit for a lot of the success of the Picnic also goes to the Club officers. Picnic attendees may not know it, but the Club officers do all the planning, arrange the venue, contribute the cost of all the food for the picnic out of their own pockets (no club dues are used), and do all the shopping for the event, the set up and the clean-up. Thank you to Club Treasurer and Communications Director Mark Wilson and his wife Janine for doing the lion’s share of the set-up and clean-up and providing the charcoal, trash bags and tableware. Many thanks to Club Director Corynne Courpas for the hamburgers and hot dogs, ice, and for selling the raffle tickets throughout the event. Thank you to Club Director Harvey Rabinowitz for help in setting up, providing your gas grill, and for helping with the cooking. And many thanks to Frank Baylor who ran the barbecue from set up, to cooking, to clean up. (Additional thanks to member Laura T. for contributing the condiments.)
The gift baskets for the raffle were also contributed by the Club officers and one of our members. Thank you to Club Director Carol Coley for the contribution of the $50 gift card to The Flood Zone in Union Bridge and to Club Secretary Paula Monroe-Davidson for the contribution of the Treats Basket that was filled with delicious treats made by our local businesses – The Caramel Kettle Gourmet Popcorn in Taneytown, JeannieBird Baking Company in Westminster, and Rare Opportunity Bakehouse in Westminster. And thank you to member (also my sister) Bernadette Kurzawski for the contribution of the Vintage style Wine Caddy, with two wines from Old Westminster Winery in Westminster. I assembled each of the baskets and contributed the Drink Local Beer Caddy with beers from Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick.
We tried to shop local as much as we could, offered some vegetarian alternatives, provided water in boxes (cartons) and sodas in cans rather than in plastic bottles, and recycled after the event. These choices are also a reflection of our values.
Over the next couple weeks, you will receive a survey asking your input on what you would like to see the Club doing as well as your preference for where the Club should meet. Of course, with COVID cases going up again and the Delta variant, the decision to meet in person rather than by Zoom on September 13th will have to remain flexible. We will let you know our decision as the date grows closer.
Take care and stay well.
Kate Sanner, President of the CC Democratic Club

Picnic Recap
The 2021 Carroll County Democratic Club Picnic was a GREAT success!
For pictures of the event, and the various terrific speakers, see:
As part of the event, Kate organized a wonderfully successful food drive:
* 265 items were donated for the food drive (the multi-pack items
  – like granola bars – were counted as one item).
Kate took half to Rob Roys/Coalition Against Prejudice to keep at his house as he
stocks the pantry every night and the other half to St. Paul’s UCC who will store
the rest until needed. They run the Pantry together.
We are all overwhelmed by the generosity.

Postcards to Voters (PTV)
If you would like to get involved in getting Democrats elected but can’t see yourself doing phone-baking or door-to-door canvassing, then postcard writing may be for you. Writing postcards to voters is one of the best ways to reach out to voters around the country about their local elections or to sign up for vote by mail. There are elections going on right now (with many more to come next year) and you can be part of getting Democrats elected by writing friendly, handwritten postcards. As a volunteer postcard writer, you will provide the postcards, stamps, and time, PTV will provide what to write, thorough instructions, and addresses of voters.
To learn more about becoming an authorized writer, go to www.postcardstovoters.org.
