About the Club

About the Newsletter

Et Cetera! (Various Other Resources)

Note from the President

Dear friends,

I hope this finds you all doing well.

Though the Club hasn’t been able to meet in person since our March meeting, we are still active and engaged virtually – through our newsletter and in our Facebook group. We also continue to take action on issues of social justice and equity as well support local organizations that help Carroll County residents in need. Please check the section titled “Your CC Democratic Club in Action” for updates. Very soon, I will be sharing with you a fun activity that the Club will be hosting and how you can participate. Stay tuned for details!

John Lewis’ courage and commitment to the cause of civil rights and voting rights will always be an inspiration. But Lewis is more than an icon for civil rights. As Former President Obama said in his eulogy for John Lewis, Lewis is a ’founding father of that fuller, fairer, better America’.

Lewis’ final words, which were printed in a New York Times Opinion piece that he asked to be published on the day of his funeral, give us a poignant call to action – one which each of us must now follow if we are to truly honor the legacy of this great man. Lewis ended his final message to us with these words:

“Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.

When historians pick up their pens to write the story of the 21st century, let them say that it was your generation who laid down the heavy burdens of hate at last and that peace finally triumphed over violence, aggression and war. So I say to you, walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.”

If you have not yet seen it, here is a link to a video from MSNBC’s “The Last Word” in which Morgan Freeman reads Lewis’ last message to us while vignettes from Lewis’ great life are shown. May John Lewis forever rest in peace and power. https://youtu.be/_i2DSkAys-8

Take care, stay involved, and stay well.

Kate Sanner

President of the CC Democratic Club

Your CC Democratic Club in Action

We may not be meeting in person, but the CC Democratic Club is still doing good in the community and speaking up on important issues.

Here are some of the Club’s latest initiatives:

  1. July 2020: Contributed $100 through our Good Work’s Fund to Carroll County Food Sunday (CCFS).

“CCFS distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, breads and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our Westminster, Eldersburg and Taneytown locations.”

Please go to their website – https://ccfoodsunday.org/ – to learn about their hours of operation and to learn how you can help. The need is so great right now for many families, please consider making your own contribution if you are able.

  1. July 2020: Signed on in support of Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative resolution titled “Health Equity Resource Communities Initiative”.

As the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative states “All Marylanders deserve access to high-quality, affordable health care. However, health inequities based on race, ethnicity, and place of residence persist throughout the state, as shown in maternal and infant mortality rates and other measures. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed these health inequities and highlighted the need to address them and otherwise improve health outcomes in our state. In underserved areas of the state, people with chronic conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and substance and mental health disorders have worse health outcomes and are less able to get the care and treatment they need.”

Their solution

“HEALTH EQUITY RESOURCE COMMUNITIES

We are advocating for Maryland to create and fund Health Equity Resource Communities to help reduce health inequities. The Communities will provide grants, tax incentives, and health care provider loan repayment assistance to locations in the state with poor health outcomes that contribute to racial, ethnic, and geographic health inequities. They will be modeled after the successful 2012-2016 Health Enterprise Zones Program which successfully increased access to health resources, improved residents’ health, reduced hospital admissions, and created cost savings. Supporting health will help reduce preventable hospital admissions, which will result in lower overall health care costs, including lower insurance premiums for everyone.”

To learn more, to get on to Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative’s mailing list, or to have your organization endorse the Health Equity Resource Communities Resolution, go to http://healthcareforall.com/get-involved/equitycommunities/.

  1. May 2020: Contributed $100 through our Good Works Fund to the Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. (HSP). Their Director of Development was to have been our speaker at the Club’s May meeting which was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Club also participated with an entry titled ”It Takes A Village” in HSP’s 4th Annual Gingerbread Village Festival in November 2019.

HSP’s MISSION:

“HSP gives HOPE, inspires CHANGE, and provides OPPORTUNITY by mobilizing our community in the fight against poverty.”

Hope, change, and opportunity are the driving forces behind everything we do at Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. We believe that with the right support, everyone can embrace hope, make meaningful changes, and take advantage of opportunities that will lead to a fulfilling and self-sufficient life.”

To learn more about HSP and to make a monetary donation during these critical times, please go to https://hspinc.org/.

Mail-In Ballot Request Link AND VIDEO (MASSIVELY UPDATED)

When I sent to request my mail-in ballot, I found that some steps or screens mentioned  in the procedure originally supplied by  West had CHANGED! (Thanks, Hogan.)

I left that original notice below, but ADDED the process I ended up following, with my own notes.

  • Mark

  1. This is the URL that I used: https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/OnlineVoterRegistration/InstructionsStep1

  2. I had to click NEXT several times. Then there was a screen to enter my personal data.

  3. This is labeled “Step 1 – Name, Birthdate and SSN” You will need:

    1. Name

    2. Birthdate

    3. Last 4 of SSN

  4. On the NEXT screen, labeled “Step 2 – MVA Information”, you will need

    1. MD Driver’s License # or ID # (Number and Date of Issue)

Click NEXT, while they check your data.

  1. On the screen labeled “Step 3 – Current Residential Address”, enter that data.

    1. NOTE: for “Street Name”, enter ONLY the name, not the “STREET” or “ROAD” part, that goes in the next entry, “Street Type” (Weird)

Click NEXT.

  1. On the next screen, labeled “Step 4 – Mailing Address”, I just chose “Send it to the address where I live in Maryland” – this is where you want them to MAIL the application.

  2. On the next screen, labeled “Step 5 – Political Party”, click “DEMOCRAT” and make sure it’s highlighted before clicking NEXT

  3. The next screens are pretty self-explanatory:

    1. Step 6 – Additional Contact Information

    2. Step 7 – Previous Registration Information [Have you registered before, has your name and/or address changed since you registered?]

  4. The next screen, labeled “Step 8 – Voter Support”:  Basically, do you need help at polls?
Yes, you have to answer this, even though you’re voting by mail. I chose “No”. There’s also an option to say you want to be an Election Judge.

  5. The next screen, labeled “Step 9 – Main-In Ballot Request”:

    1. Click the SECOND radio button, “I would like to receive a mail-in ballot”

    2. When a big block of text opens up, check the box “I would like a mail-in ballot for the 2020 Presidential General Election”

    3. Choose a “Delivery Method”; I just chose the second option, “Through email”.

      1. In the mail

      2. Through email, or

      3. As a fax

  6. The next screen, labeled “Step 10 – Oath and Signature”:

    1. Check ALL the boxes

    2. Type your name in the Signature box

    3. Click NEXT

  7. The next screen, “Step 1 – Preview and Submit Application”: review data, click SUBMIT

  8. You will get a CONFIRMATION screen, including a long confirmation number.  I printed the page for my records. It says they “will process your information soon”.
NOTE: The ballots will not be received via ANY method for a month or two.
    According to the site:
We start sending mail-in ballots about 30-45 days before an election. You can check the status of your mail-in ballot [here: https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/VoterSearch ]

ORIGINAL POSTING:

Here is a link to the MD State Board of Elections website to request a mail-in ballot for November:

https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/OnlineVoterRegistration/InstructionsStep1?fbclid=IwAR3TBcQ0l7Rc_Q6OGvtwBu60oMh6SHU2vWvpEgssIu2vcMBh_OxkQYqxAAY

Be aware, you will need a MD Driver’s License or similar MD ID.  It is a bit cumbersome with something like 10 or 11 steps, and it can be a bit confusing because it is also used for registering to vote.  Stay with it, and you’ll be fine.

(NOTE: Since the process can be confusing, here’s a link to a FACEBOOK VIDEO about how to do it, from Speaker Adrienne Jones: https://www.facebook.com/2292917797435671/posts/3291566554237452/ )

Maintain your personal safety while exercising your right to vote!
(Thanks to Don West for this)

DUES ARE DUE (UPDATED)

Because of COVD-19, the annual Club Picnic (normally held in July) was CANCELLED.

Now, lots of club members have renewed their dues at the Picnic – in fact, more than HALF of our members normally do so!

Since that won’t be an option this year, this is a reminder that DUES ARE DUE! (?)

(Since the Club Year runs May – May, the 2020-2021 Club Year began just last month.)

So, send those dues to Mark Wilson, 1699 King Richard Road, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

Dues are $15 for an individual, or $25 for a couple/family – unchanged for years and years and years!

Such a bargain! And in this election year, so critical!

Make your checks payable to “CCDemClub” or “Carroll County Democratic Club”.

OR, if you prefer to use PAYPAL, send your dues payment to ccdem…@gmail.com and be sure to use the “Add a Note” section to let me know this payment IS for dues, as opposed to a plain donation.

ALSO drop me a line at wils…@gmail.com so I know to be looking for the payment, I don’t get automatic notifications!

(NOTE the “md” at the end of the email address!)

In return, you will be sent a super-spiffy membership card  – woohoo!

UPDATE: We already have 32 members, in 23 memberships, with at least SEVEN NEW MEMBERS!
Keep ‘em coming!

  • Mark

THE CLUB NOW TAKES PAYPAL!

We’ve added the option to send money to the Carroll County Democratic Club via PayPal, if you prefer that to sending a check.

I’ve set up a PayPal account under the email “ccdem…@gmail.com” (NOTE the “md” at the end!).

You can now send payments to that email (ccdem…@gmail.com).
If you do, please use the “Add a Note” section below the amount you’re sending so I know what it’s for (dues, general contribution, contribution to the GoodWorks Fund, perhaps a specific fundraiser, whatever). Thanks!

WHY A.G. FROSH OPPOSES HOGAN’S VOTING PLAN

Write Postcards with Flip the West to Flip the Senate Blue

“Flip the West’s postcard campaigns are focused on flipping the U.S. Senate. Winning the Senate is key to the future of the courts, expanding healthcare, protecting the environment, racial justice and so many other critical issues. With all plans for canvassing on hold, reaching voters with postcards becomes tremendously important.

Currently our postcard campaign is in Iowa. We are writing to voters there, urging them to elect Democrat Teresa Greenfield to the U.S. Senate. Polls in Iowa show that she has a real chance to defeat Republican Senator Joni Ernst, a true Trump lackey.

Once you sign up, you will receive your list of names and addresses in an email within 72 hours.”

New Ways to Get Involved and Make an Impact!

We’ve just gotten notified of TWO ways people can get involved with the effort to build a Big Blue Wave this November!

– Carroll County Phonebank

– Ways to support Jamie Raskin’s e-election

——————————————————————–

1) Carroll County Phonebank

From Justin Wilson, Regional Organizing Director of MDDEMS.ORG:

Here is the information about our phonebanking program:

With the rise of school closings and people working from home during the coronavirus outbreak,

I have decided that the best way to build up the party and prepare our Pennsylvania export program for roll out is to set up weekly remote phonebanks.

Starting this week, I’ll be hosting a training every Monday @ 7:30pm on zoom video conferencing.

The URL for that training is https://zoom.us/j/835664857

Hopefully we can recruit more and more volunteers in the coming weeks.

Our script has three priorities:

– Informing folks of the postponement of the MD primary and to emphasize the importance of voting by mail,

– gathering information from voters to help increase voter turnout in 2020 and 2022 as well as

– identifying folks who are willing to volunteer in a big GOTV operation for the general election for Pennsylvania.

If we prepare now, we can turn PA blue in November!
