Advocacy Opportunity! Ask Legislators to Support the Health Insurance Down Payment Plan

From Vincent DeMarco of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative:

I want to thank everyone who has contacted their legislators and asked them to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board. Now I am asking you to please help us defend the gains we have made under the Affordable Care in Maryland. The ACA has provided coverage to over 400,000 Marylanders. But, this progress is in danger because of the federal decision not to enforce the individual mandate.

Please contact your legislators (via our Action Page) and urge them to co-sponsor legislation to be introduced by Senator Brian Feldman and Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk to create a Health Insurance Down Payment Plan.

This plan would give people without health coverage a choice: either pay a penalty to the state or instead use that money to purchase quality, affordable healthcare. Not only would this help stabilize the individual market, but it could incentivize over 130,000 more Marylanders get the coverage they need.

Please go to our Action Page to easily send emails to all of your state legislators and see their phone numbers. Or, you can look up their information at mdelect.net

Thank you for all that you continue to do to support quality, affordable healthcare for all Marylanders. We’ll continue to send you updates as the legislative session unfolds.

Opportunity: Paid Internship with the Maryland Democratic Party

The Maryland Democratic Party is now offering a paid internship program.  We are very excited about this change and hope you are as well.  More information and instructions on how to apply can be found at https://www.mddems.org/intern.

Note from the President

Per our By-Laws, I appointed a Nominating Committee to come up with a slate of officers for 2019-20. The Committee is chaired by Corynne Courpas, and the members are Ellen Marble and Tom Scanlan They will submit the slate at our March Meeting, with the elections in April. If you have an interest in serving as an officer, or know someone who may be interested, please contact the Club. (Drop Mark a line at wils…@gmail.com and he’ll forward your info to the committee.)

I enjoyed my terms as your President, but it’s time for a fresh face and new perspective, so I am not a candidate for any office. But I’ll remain on the Executive Board as Immediate Past President. I’m sure the new EB will enjoy the support of Club Members as we do our part to help Democrats in Carroll County.

Have a Happy and safe New year.

– Frank Rammes

Humane Society campaign – complete!

The CCDC sponsored a December holiday donation event for the Humane Society of Carroll County.

We raised $250, which goes directly to the HSCC. There will be a ceremonial presentation at our  March 4 meeting, but the actual check has already been given to the HSCC. The proceeds will go toward spaying and neutering, food, toys, medical supplies, etc.  We are pleased to support our county’s essentially no-kill shelter.

It’s time to give them the support they deserve. On March 11th we’re marching to make sure that every student in every neighborhood has a great public school and an equal opportunity for success.
