Note from the President (UPDATED)

Thanks to all of you who attended the Carroll County Democratic Club Holiday Party on Monday, December 9 at The Buttersburg Inn in Union Bridge. It was a wonderful event! We had the restaurant all to ourselves and had the largest number of attendees than the Club has ever had at the annual event. Buttersburg Inn owners Frank Tunzi and Jim Rowe along with their great staff provided us a delicious buffet and attentive service. We appreciate their opening up their restaurant to our Club on their day off.

The Club held a gift basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle which brought in $325.00 with all proceeds going to the Club’s Good Works Fund which donates to local charities, causes, and organizations. At the event, Club Treasurer Mark Wilson and Club President Kate Sanner presented a check from the Good Works Fund to Carroll County Food Sunday (CCFS). Frank Baylor, Immediate Past President of CCFS, accepted the check on CCFS’ behalf.

Our next Club meeting will take place on Monday, January 6, 2020 from 7-8:30 PM in the Large Meeting Room of the Public Library in Westminster. The event is titled Welcome to the New Year: Getting Prepared for the 2020 Presidential Election. There will be several local speakers who will do short presentations and share their ideas, knowledge and expertise for preparing for this upcoming historic election year. We hope that all who attend will also bring their ideas and suggestions. Light refreshments will be provided.

Our February meeting will be a special event on Monday, February 3 from 6:30PM – 8:30PM (NOTE the change date and time) in the Large Meeting Room of the Public Library in Westminster. The Club will sponsor a mini-workshop on Writing Effective Letters to the Editor, Longer pieces such as for Other Voices in CC Times, and Opinion pieces. The workshop will be free to attendees. Our presenter will be Deborah Carter. Morning time beverages and light fare will be provided.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. Remember, you don’t have to be a Club member to attend any of our meetings or events. Thank you for all you do to give Democrats an important presence and vibrant voice in Carroll County.

Kate

New episode of the Moving Forward podcast

Kate Sanner’s latest podcast:

Just a soldier returning home: Honoring Private Indiana Hunt-Martin

Private Indiana Hunt-Martin was a member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion – a group of unsung heroes of WWII. The unit’s nickname was the “Six-Triple Eight” and they were the first and only all Black Female Women Army Corps (WAC) unit to be deployed overseas. Their task was to clear a mountainous backlog of mail in England and France that had not reached servicemen in the European Theater of WWII. Their motto was “No Mail, Low Morale.”

Kate Sanner, host of Moving Forward, interviews Ms. Indiana Hunt-Martin who recently turned 97 years old. In the interview, Ms. Hunt Martin talks about her enlistment in the WAC, being assigned to the Six Triple Eight, and being deployed overseas. She also talks about the challenges of their task of addressing the mountainous backlog of mail, the challenge of racism and segregation, and her life and work once she returned to the U.S., and the honors and recognition that are now being bestowed on the women of the Six Triple Eight.

WE NEED YOU TO VOLUNTEER

For Democrats in Carroll County, having a consistent and persistent presence and voice is vital to our making a difference in the political and social life of our county. However, initiating and maintaining a strong presence and voice takes time and effort and that means building and maintaining a strong volunteer base.

We need volunteers – not just at election time, though that is very important – but throughout the year. Our Club members can volunteer for the Club’s own activities but also for activities of the CC Democratic Central Committee.

Here are some current examples of volunteer efforts:

  • At election time, the Club holds a Sign Rally at which volunteers take our Democratic candidates’ campaign signs to put up and later remove at voting sites around Carroll County. That is a fantastic effort by our Club members and a big help to our candidates.

  • Recently, the Central Committee had a booth from opening to closing time for both days of FallFest and we were so fortunate to have had a couple new volunteers, in addition to our Central Committee members, to staff the booth. We are grateful to them!

  • With the election year coming up we need more people to step up to volunteer. We will need volunteers to help write postcards, phone bank, do door-to-door campaigning for candidates, staff campaign headquarters when it opens next September, as well as do electioneering (hold signs, hand out campaign literature) at the polls for our Democratic candidates. You can sign up to volunteer at https://ccdems.com/volunteer/.

If you are interested in helping out over the next several months with Club activities, please email me at kates…@gmail.com. I would love to have your help!

Thanks so much! – Kate
