CCDemClub NEWSLETTER #189, 10/8/2020

NOTE: The Newsletter is changing! For starters, we’re streamlining the content, with large chunks now LINKED, and related items grouped together more.

We will be soliciting ideas and suggestions – watch your inboxes for that Blast, probably after the election!

NEW and UPDATED items are marked and highlighted in the Table of Contents, and in the details.

For UPDATED items, I’ll try to highlight the changed or new bits (like this!)
For information on joining the club, see “About the Club” at the end of the newsletter.

Any problems, or to submit items for the newsletter, email me at wils…
– Mark

Some folks were asking… Club meetings are on hold for now. We are looking into what would be required to hold Zoom meetings, and naturally in-person meetings will likely not resume for quite some time. Any meetings WILL be announced well in advance in this newsletter, and will also be listed on the CCDEMS Calendar:

Help Flip the First! (NEW 10/7)

Let’s defeat congressman Andy Harris! If you can pass out campaign literature at any of Carroll County’s voting centers during early voting or on Election Day, email lau… or call (410) 94-MASON.

Protect our Voting Rights! Poll Watchers help assure that in-person voting goes smoothly and legally. A candidate’s poll watcher is the Democratic Party’s eyes and ears at polling places. If an irregularity occurs, you are the person who contacts MDP to alert the party’s legal team and get them into action. If you’re that person, contact lau… or visit the Maryland Democratic  Party website,

The State Board of Elections says that early voting will begin October 26. Each early voting center will be open continuously from 7 am to 8 pm each day. Anyone in line at 8 pm will be allowed to vote.

There are TWO early voting centers in Carroll County:

  • Westminster Senior Activities Center, 125 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157

  • South Carroll Swim Club, 1900 W. Liberty Road, Westminster, MD 21157 (west of Eldersburg)

Note from the President

Dear friends,

I hope this finds you all doing well.

The Club has been busy in these last few weeks before the election. We launched a Get Out the Vote Postcard campaign that will go out to over 4,000 Carroll County voters. The GOTV postcard is based on the digital ad the Carroll County Democrats are running on the billboard by the Sheetz on Rt. 140 in Westminster.

On the back of the cards, our volunteers are writing a short message like “Voting is your superpower” and “Democracy is on the ballot this year” and hand-addressing them.

An effort like this takes a team and I first want to give a shout out to two of the Club Board members who have been instrumental in getting it accomplished. Corynne Courpas has coordinated the entire campaign – from contacting volunteers to buying the stamps and printing instruction sheets to distributing the packets. Carol Coley assembled the packets of 100 cards, a roll of stamps, a list of 100 names and addresses, and an instruction sheet. Thank you Corynne and Carol for the impressive organization!

Thank you to all the volunteers who signed up to be postcard writers and are getting these postcards knocked out just as ballots are going out to absentee voters. The Club would not have been able to accomplish this project without our wonderful volunteers.

Thank you for all those who provided me input and helped edit my copy for the postcard and the instruction sheet. Thank you to those who gave input on the universe of voters to send cards to and to Raquel Walsh who honed in on this universe of voters and generated all the names and addresses based on the parameters that were chosen.

And thanks to Bob Lord of Lord Industries who designed this high-quality, very attractive postcard and to the great Union printers who printed them.

In other Club activity, the Club was proud to make another $100 donation from its Good Works Fund to The Shepherd’s Staff which serves those in crisis in Carroll County, Maryland.

The Club also donated $500 to the “Get Mitch or Die Trying” fund that donates to Democrats running in top Senate races. This fund splits evenly between Steve Bullock (MT), Sara Gideon (ME), MJ Hegar (TX), Jaime Harrison (SC), John Hickenlooper (CO), Alan Gross (AK), Mike Espy (MS), Jon Ossoff (GA), Doug Jones (AL), Gary Peters (MI), Theresa Greenfield (IA), Raphael Warnock(GA), Barbara Bollier (KS), and Cal Cunningham  (NC). Getting control of the Senate is crucial and we are proud to be part of the effort to get these outstanding candidates elected.

Just a reminder: The Carroll County Democrats Victory Auction sponsored by the CC Democratic Club is going on through 11:59 PM on Saturday, October 24, 2020. You can still make bids on some great items at

The election season is now on, so take care of yourselves, stay involved, and stay well. We need you.

Helping the Community Through In-Kind Donations: Moving Forward Interview with Jennifer Bergantz, Founder of Maryland InKind Network

Here’s my latest podcast interview with Jennifer Bergantz, founder of Maryland InKIND Network, a grassroots volunteer-led organization that serves communities in need through the collection and distribution of in-kind goods.

Since 2017, Maryland InKIND Network has been serving families and supporting organizations throughout Maryland including: families seeking asylum in Maryland, children separated at our border, Immigrant Families Together, backpack programs through local public elementary schools, Love the Hopeful, local animal shelters and rescues, and supply assistance to the US/Mexico border camps.

The key mission for the group is the reallocation of extra or unwanted materials to where they are most needed.

A reminder on how important it is to vote:

Your CC Democratic Club in Action

We may not be meeting in person, but the CC Democratic Club is still doing good in the community and speaking up on important issues.

Here are some of the Club’s latest initiatives:

1. Donated $100.00 through our Good Works Fund to The Shepherd’s Staff which serves those in crisis in Carroll County, Maryland

2. Donated $500.00 to the “Get Mitch or Die Trying” fund that donates to Democrats running in top Senate races. This fund splits evenly between Steve Bullock (MT), Sara Gideon (ME), MJ Hegar (TX), Jaime Harrison (SC), John Hickenlooper (CO), Alan Gross (AK), Mike Espy (MS), Jon Ossoff (GA), Doug Jones (AL), Gary Peters (MI), Theresa Greenfield (IA), Raphael Warnock(GA), Barbara Bollier (KS), and Cal Cunningham  (NC).

3. GOTV postcard campaign – The Club is in the midst of sending out Get Out the Vote postcards to Carroll County voters. We have so many wonderful volunteers who are writing a great message on these postcards, then addressing, stamping, and mailing them.

4. Sponsoring the Carroll County Democrats Victory Auction. Join the Carroll County Democratic Club in supporting Democratic candidates, values, and progress for all in Carroll County, MD.  Proceeds from this auction will go toward efforts to get Joe Biden elected, as well as Democratic candidates up and down the ticket.  Let’s have a Blue Wave in Carroll County in 2020!

5. July 2020: Contributed $100 through our Good Work’s Fund to Carroll County Food Sunday (CCFS).

“CCFS distributes a weekly, nutritionally balanced grocery package that is predicated on household size and is meant to last 3-4 days. It includes meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, breads and milk. Over 400 families a week are served at our Westminster, Eldersburg and Taneytown locations.”

Please go to their website – – to learn about their hours of operation and to learn how you can help. The need is so great right now for many families, please consider making your own contribution if you are able.

6. July 2020: Signed on in support of Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative resolution titled “Health Equity Resource Communities Initiative”.

As the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative states “All Marylanders deserve access to high-quality, affordable health care. However, health inequities based on race, ethnicity, and place of residence persist throughout the state, as shown in maternal and infant mortality rates and other measures. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed these health inequities and highlighted the need to address them and otherwise improve health outcomes in our state. In underserved areas of the state, people with chronic conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and substance and mental health disorders have worse health outcomes and are less able to get the care and treatment they need.”

 Their solution

We are advocating for Maryland to create and fund Health Equity Resource Communities to help reduce health inequities. The Communities will provide grants, tax incentives, and health care provider loan repayment assistance to locations in the state with poor health outcomes that contribute to racial, ethnic, and geographic health inequities. They will be modeled after the successful 2012-2016 Health Enterprise Zones Program which successfully increased access to health resources, improved residents’ health, reduced hospital admissions, and created cost savings. Supporting health will help reduce preventable hospital admissions, which will result in lower overall health care costs, including lower insurance premiums for everyone.”

7. May 2020: Contributed $100 through our Good Work’s Fund to the Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. (HSP). Their Director of Development was to have been our speaker at the Club’s May meeting which was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Club also participated with an entry titled ”It Takes A Village” in HSP’s 4th Annual Gingerbread Village Festival in November 2019.

“HSP gives HOPE, inspires CHANGE, and provides OPPORTUNITY by mobilizing our community in the fight against poverty.”

Hope, change, and opportunity are the driving forces behind everything we do at Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. We believe that with the right support, everyone can embrace hope, make meaningful changes, and take advantage of opportunities that will lead to a fulfilling and self-sufficient life.”
