Note from the President
Our November meeting will take place on Monday, November 4 and in honor of Veterans Day, we will have a panel of veterans as our speakers. We would love to see a big turnout for this event – to show our gratitude to our veterans and to learn how we can best support them. The meeting will take place at Johansson’s in Westminster. We start the meeting at 7, but several of us come at 6 to have dinner together. Please join us!
Please mark your calendars for the Club’s Holiday Party on Monday, December 9 at The Buttersburg Inn in Union Bridge. The Club will be holding a gift basket raffle – and perhaps a 50/50 raffle – to help raise money for our Good Works fund that makes contributions to groups, organizations, and causes in our County. Please read more about it in this newsletter.
In addition to some of our wonderful Club events, our club also endeavors to support the efforts of the CC Democratic Central Committee…and that takes an active volunteer base. Please read my section on volunteering later in this newsletter and then sign up to bring some of your special skills to help make a difference through volunteerism.
Thank you for all you do to give Democrats an important presence and vibrant voice in Carroll County.
Kate
WE NEED YOU TO VOLUNTEER
For Democrats in Carroll County, having a consistent and persistent presence and voice is vital to our making a difference in the political and social life of our county. However, initiating and maintaining a strong presence and voice takes time and effort and that means building and maintaining a strong volunteer base.
We need volunteers – not just at election time, though that is very important – but throughout the year. Our Club members can volunteer for the Club’s own activities but also for activities of the CC Democratic Central Committee.
Here are some current examples of volunteer efforts:
-
At election time, the Club holds a Sign Rally at which volunteers take our Democratic candidates’ campaign signs to put up and later remove at voting sites around Carroll County. That is a fantastic effort by our Club members and a big help to our candidates.
-
Recently, the Central Committee had a booth from opening to closing time for both days of FallFest and we were so fortunate to have had a couple new volunteers, in addition to our Central Committee members, to staff the booth. We are grateful to them!
-
With the election year coming up we need more people to step up to volunteer. We will need volunteers to help write postcards, phone bank, do door-to-door campaigning for candidates, staff campaign headquarters when it opens next September, as well as do electioneering (hold signs, hand out campaign literature) at the polls for our Democratic candidates. You can sign up to volunteer at https://ccdems.com/volunteer/.
If you are interested in helping out over the next several months with Club activities, please email me at kates…@gmail.com. I would love to have your help!
Thanks so much! – Kate

Honoring the Women of the Six Triple Eight Central Postal Directory Battalion of WWII
One group of unsung heroes of WWII were the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The 6888th was the first and only all Black Female Women Army Corps (WAC) unit to be deployed overseas during under the Command of Major Charity Adams. Their nickname was the “Six-Triple Eight” and their motto was “No Mail, Low Morale.”

Cummings and Master Sergeant Elizabeth Helm Frazier who discuss the efforts being made to secure the recognition these women so rightfully deserve including the Six Triple Eight Monument, the “Six Triple Eight: No Mail, Low Morale Documentary” and the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2019.
