Minutes of the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee March 9, 2017 In attendance: Don West, Mitch Edelman, Frank Rammes, Dorothy Scanlan, Tom Scanlan, Chuck Harrison, Anita Riley, Anne Stoner, Corynne Courpas Interns: Ryan Koch Guests: Dan Andrews The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Don West. Pledge of Allegiance Chair's Report We received an acknowledgment for the donation in memory of Debbie Ridgely to the Humane Society of Carroll County. It was noted that staunch Democratic supporter Nimrod Davis died in February. A motion was made and passed to make a donation in his memory to the Sykesville chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. At the state party executive meeting on March 1 Kathleen Matthews was elected to be interim state chair. The permanent chair will be elected at the May state party meeting. It will be for a four year term; the gubernatorial election will be in the middle of it. Last Friday's student-led rally was very well attended. Secretary's Report The February minutes were approved. Treasurer's Report There is a balance of $ 3,026.56 in our checking account. The main expenditure was the bumper sticker. Our next expenditures will be insurance and the PAC table sponsorship. The Treasurer's report was approved. Club Reports CC Dems: The March meeting was well attended with new people and people who haven't attended in a while. Ben Yingling, who is running for the Westminster City Council is the scheduled April speaker. The club's annual picnic will be July 30th from 1-4. It will be held at the Silver Run/Union Mills Park. Everyone will need to sign up to bring a dish to share. Club membership is required to attend the picnic. Ryan Koch is the recipient of the club scholarship. Congratulations, Ryan! South Carroll Club: No report. Young Dems: Zach has contacted the teacher advisor of the Democratic club at Westminster High School. He will be meeting with the club this month. Local Activism VOCAL: Muri Dueppen could use assistance with this new activist group. There will be a meeting on March 19th at the Mt. Airty library @ 2pm. The meeting will emphasize local elections. Carroll CAN: the most recent meeting (March 5th) was very well attended. The group has hired a bus to take people to the science march on April 22nd. The healthcare forum was terrific-it was well attended and well organized. Committee Reports Local Politics: Commissioners Weaver and Howard proposed a use for North Carroll High School. The building would be multi-purpose: it would house the CCPS central office and the sheriff's office. Karen Leatherwood will be running for the District 5 commissioner seat. Annapolis Report: The delegation voted against the sick leave bill. Otherwise our delegation is involved in their typical political posturing. Tom and Dorothy went to Annapolis to lobby for public education. Communications: Website: no report Twitter: no report Facebook: we have over 900 likes. We need to create more personal content and not just share liberal leaning news articles. VAN: no report Western MD PAC: The next meeting is February 21st. The meeting will focus on planning for the summit. This event is open to the public. A motion was made to sponsor a table at the summit. A table seats 8 people and costs $600. Once again, the cost of attending the summit would be split 50/50 between the CCDCC and attendee. Motion carried. We will have to come up with a new ad. LGBTQ: PFLAG is have an education session on Title 9/transgender issues. The Fairness for All Marylanders act does not cover public schools. Interns: There is a junior at Winters Mill High School who is interested in being an intern. Events Victory Dinner: Will take place at Martin's Westminster. Ticket prices will remain $75 or $70/pp for a table of ten. There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Doors open at 6:30. We are hoping to get Elijah Cummings as our keynote speaker. We are still in need of silent auction items and ads for our program. Town Hall: we would like to move this forward and have Jamie Raskin come and host a forum on the opioid crisis. Old Business HR Report: do we want to have a headquarters for the 2018 elections? Bumper Stickers: are here. We purchased 125 magnets and 250 regular. We will charge $2.00 for the magnets and $1.00 for the regular. Two Year Plan: Christian Ready and Zach are working on it. New Business None. The meeting adjourned at 8:55pm.
