Minutes of the Carroll County Democratic Central Committee October 13, 2016 In attendance: Don West, Mitch Edelman, Charles Harrison, Frank Rammes, Dorothy Scanlan, Tom Scanlan, Anita Riley, Anne Stoner, Zach Hands, Joan McGrath Interns: Ryan Koch The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by Don West. Pledge of Allegiance Chair's Report Don reviewed the events of the past month: grand opening of the HQ, the fall breakfast, Rep v. Dem softball game, and Fallfest. It was unanimously agreed that our speaker for the breakfast, Donna Edwards, was excellent. There was a state party meeting on September 19th which Corynne attended. Discussion at that meeting primarily revolved around the coordinated campaign. Don suggested that those who work at HQ could assemble signs while they are there. We will ed to put signs up for early voting. Secretary's Report The August minutes were approved. Treasurer's Report There is a balance of $2,345.75 in our checking account. The Treasurer's report was approved. Club Reports CC Dems: The October meeting hosted a very successful forum for the Board of Education candidates and was well attended. There will be no more meetings until March, when Angela Gustus is the scheduled speaker. South Carroll Club: Members have been working on reorganizing. We should invite members to come to the holiday dinner. Committee Reports Headquarters: Evening hours will be adjusted to 4-8pm. Friday evenings are still not covered. Frank is working every Saturday from 91-12. We need to ensure that posted hours are staffed. Don has gotten a couple of calls from people who have gone to HQ and found it closed. Local Politics: The Combined Education Committee is supposed to come up with recommendations to solve the Carroll County Public Schools' funding gap, but seems nowhere close to doing so. Committee members keep plowing the same ground. We should keep our eye on what is going on with the Wakefield Valley parcel. What is being proposed is not for citizens of Carroll County: a large sports complex with space for hundreds of cars. This is clearly supposed to be a draw for outside groups. Communications: We are sending regular eblasts and will continue to do so through the election. We need to remember to check email the day after an eblast goes out. Keep the LTEs coming. VAN: Walk lists are now available for Westminster and Sykesville. Call lists are available as well. Make sure to tell people they have to use their own phones-some may not be comfortable with that. Interns: tabled until after the election Old Business Charter: we have heard nothing. Congressional Candidate District 8 forum: there will be a Raskin/Cox debate tonight in Thurmont. Jamie would like to hold a town hall meeting after the election (in the new year) to talk about the opioid epidemic. Holiday gathering: The menu has been sent for attendees to choose in advance. The price will be the same as last year: $35. The PG county executive, Rushern Baker, has been asked to speak. Presidential debates: the next one is October 19. We will host phone banking from 7-9pm. New Business Halloween parade: we need to ensure HQ is open that night. Many people have asked for the ''Courage is being a Carroll County Democrat'' bumper stickers - enough that we should look into getting these made. Candidate recruitment: tabled Carroll County Board of Elections: we were invited to take part in a public demonstration of the new voting units on October 18. The meeting adjourned at 9:00pm. Our next meeting will be November 10, 2016. Respectfully submitted, Dorothy Scanlan Recording Secretary, CCDCC
